The NSW shadow minister for education Jihad Dib has flagged Labor support for calls to have the government purchase land in Milton for a second high school.
This follows a speech in the NSW Legislative Assembly by South Coast MP on Thursday, September 21 to garner support for the idea.
Mrs Hancock has urged the state government to purchase the former Shoalhaven Anglican School (SAS) site on Croobyar Road.
Mr Dib, who started his teaching career at Ulladulla High School, said schools in the region were “bursting at the seams”.
He said the high school had grown by “about 300 kids” since he left in 2001. It is understood about 1200 students are enrolled at Ulladulla High School.
Buying the former SAS complex was a “good idea”, Mr Dib said.
“I think the demographers indicate that it is worthwhile and it is certainly a really good idea to purchase a school that is purpose built and ready to go,” he said.
“If you have something that is ready to go, purchasing it is much easier. I think it is a sensible idea.
“It makes sense. I know the schools here are bursting at the seams.
“While the government now has the rivers of gold, this would be a good opportunity.”
Mr Dib said the government needed to plan for the future to avoid an “overcrowding crisis”.
“Over the next 15 years, there will be an additional 15,000 students in NSW public schools,” he said.
“Why would you wait until you get to the crisis point when you can see it coming? If it can be fixed, let’s fix it and I think this is a pretty easy fix.
“Whether it becomes a primary school or a high school, the community knows what is most required. We need to make sure into the future, if there is a situation we can rectify, that we do that.”
