Despite horrendous weather predictions forecast for the weekend, well in excess of 100 competitors hit the water at Burrill Lake in this year’s Lake Lunacy, hosted by the local Makai Paddlers Society.

The two-day carnival involved the PNSW Marathon series event, which attracts the best flat-water paddlers in the state, all-vying for crucial competition points.
Paddlers had the option of racing 10, 15, 20, or an amazing 25km on a 5km loop.
This ensured the support crews and spectators were entertained with a continual stream of paddlers past the arena at BIG4 Bungalow Park.
Previous State champion Matt Blundell from Narrabeen once again proved his dominance by winning the hotly contested Division 1 Category.
After the Marathon there was no time to rest, with the much-anticipated SUPer X Splash for Cash.
With more than $500 up for grabs the SUP community was more than catered for.
Paul Mackie fought his way through several elimination heats to take the cash from local Adrian Wright from Coastal Paddle Surf and SUP.
Sunday saw the running of the Makai Multi-sport event.
Last year’s winner Damo Staunton was out due to injury, which left the field wide open for someone else to claim the crown.
The Multi-sport is a great event that helps showcase the spectacular Burrill Lake and the surrounding Meroo National Park.
The event starts with a 7km paddle and continues with an 8km bush run on the fire trails that meander around the lake’s foreshore.
“It’s an outstanding opportunity for visiting competitors to be able to witness the beauty of our lake, which we sometimes can take for granted,” said race director Damo Staunton.
Our locals featured strongly in most of the categories that were contested.
Outright winners and first team home was Paul Burton and runner Jed Frank in a time of 1:03:02 closely followed by our first individual competitor Matt Blundell - Yes the guy that won the Saturday Marathon!
Second team home was Mollymook Outrigger 6 man and runner Jake Myors, closely followed by Jon Tucker and Steve Grant.
First Mixed team in was Toby Hogbin and local nine-year-old Melanie Staunton in a time of 1:13:09

Once again the team at Makai Paddlers has pulled together to provide an amazing experience for all that attended.
The event last year was dubbed the best event of the year, and already the PNSW Marathon Committee has predicted the same for this year.
