About 20 people with disabilities were supported by a large team of volunteers including many Ulladulla High School students during the event.

And there were many highlights, particularly for former surfers Shane Nicholas and Peter Young who had not been able to surf since suffering accidents and disabilities.

Shane said it was five years since had had been on a wave, and he managed to catch some with the help of his son Chris Nicholas who was also on the board.

Shane said the experiences was "excellent" as he pumped his fist in delight

Peter Young came down from Sydney for the day, and said he had been surfing with the DSA for about seven years.

And there were many other highlights including Brock Miller constantly getting to his feet and riding waves all the way to the sand.

His efforts won Brock an award for best floater during the few hours of riding waves.

Peter Gilford was also getting to his feet frequently, and even rode with his board beside one being ridden by wife Lusa.

Champion young athlete Sarah Walsh was another getting to her feet, while others were happy to get to their knees on the soft boards, or even just lie flat and enjoy the experience of being carried by the waves.

Daniel Colebrook was named surfer of the day, while James Kingsford was awarded the most inspirational.
