The 43-year-old, one of Australia's most successful golfers of the last 20 years, was kidnapped, beaten and robbed in Honolulu, Hawaii on Friday night before being dumped about 10 kilometres away from where he was abducted.

Allenby was at a popular bar in the tourist-laden Waikiki with his close friend Anthony Puntoriero and caddie Mick Middlemo where he believes he was drugged before being taken to an underground car park, knocked out and thrown into the boot of a car.

Photos show the Melbourne-born golfer sustained notable damage and lacerations to his face.

"I didn't think I was going to survive this one," said Allenby, who told police he had no recollection of leaving the bar.

"I was separated from my friend in the bar after we had paid the tab at 10:48pm and he went to the bathroom and next thing you know I'm being dumped in a park miles away.

"I only know this part because a homeless woman found me and told me she saw a few guys pull up and throw me out of the car.

"That is where I got the scrapes above my eye, from the sidewalk," he told AAP.

Allenby's father Don said he was "devastated" when he saw the photo of his son's beaten face on television.

"I could not believe that had happened to my son. Because he is so good to everybody," Don Allenby told Channel Nine.

Allenby had originally planned before the incident to fly back to the U.S mainland after failing to make the cut at the PGA Tour event in Hawaii - the Sony Open - however spent Saturday morning assisting police and the tour's FBI officials with inquiries.

"We have some names and numbers and they have some leads to follow up, so I am confident they will get the guys," Allenby said.

"With the FBI guys involved, they're the best, the guys on the tour are awesome, and they'll get to the bottom of it."

Allenby said he awoke groggy from the attack without his phone, wallet, cash and cards, and was starting to be harassed by other homeless people in the park.

"The homeless woman got me away from the others and then a retired military guy walking past came to my aid," he said.

"He got me into a taxi and paid for me to get to my hotel and I called police from there. I have his details and will be getting back in touch with him for sure."

Scans have cleared Allenby of any serious facial or head injuries and he is hopeful of being cleared to fly in the next day or two.

He said he was concerned he would not be able to call his 13-year-old daughter for her birthday.

"She's really upset about it but at the end of the day it could have been a lot worse," he said.

"I don't care about the money or my cards or anything like that. I am just glad I have survived this one."

Having watched his game spiral into a major downturn through 2012 and 2013, Allenby (now ranked 271st in the world) revealed he had seriously considered giving up on a career that has featured 22 tournament wins and $30 million in prize money.

However, when he returned to Australia this summer to compete in the triple crown events, Allenby told the media he had "fallen in love with golf again" after his 15-year-old son recently began taking up the sport and rekindled his passion.

He is the only player to win the Australian Masters, Open and PGA Championship in one summer, a feat he achieved in 2005.

Fellow golfers have turned to social media to express their shock.

Ricky Barnes, a PGA Tour professional, said on Twitter: "Wow after having a tough week in Oahu I flew back to az to hear about the horrible news about Robert Allenby. Hope all is ok buddy!"

Another professional Nate McCoy tweeted: "Can't believe what happened to Robert Allenby. This world is a mess."
