Like a bath in a delicious mix of Easter eggs is the sweetened weekly wash, proudly brought to you by AKWA Surf, keeping you informed with all the surf happenings locally and what's been happening on the pro tour.
Surf, surf and more surf.
April has kicked off with more style than James Bond wearing a fedora dancing to Frank Sinatra at the Marlin.
We have had an abundance of waves with a huge pulse creeping through on Good Friday which stayed with us for the four-day weekend to provide quality to all surfers who ventured into the water. Even better news is the forecast is showing another spike in the waves to give us mores waves than the Blessing of the Fleet princesses throw out while on their floats, so keep keen and ready because there is surf.
Wow, Friday the waves at Golfy turned on, a solid six foot plus seas grew and grew and the surfers really took advantage of the conditions, but as the darkness cloaked the water we decided to test the lights for the nocturnal event and plenty of the boys hung around to try out the eerie and excitement of night surfing with around 20 surfers putting their wetsuits on and stroking out into the line-up at 9pm.
Sam Wrench was really eager to test his "cat eyes" and from the beach it looked like they worked a treat. Sammy was one of the standouts among a group of local stars as he bashed the flawless six foot walls to make the crowd on the beach roar cheers so loud car alarms ignited and dogs howled.
Speaking of night surfing, the Nocturnal Surf Tag was the highlight of this week's surfing, with such an amazing response from our community who are always so generous, from all the sponsors to the band to the "Rubbish fairies" who cleaned the area so well it sparkled, and of course the surfers who put on a show to remember - it was humbling.
Some surfers who shone brighter than a pimple on a kid who just inhaled 50 chockie eggs were Georgia Johnson, who took out the ladies surfer of the event, Gemma Affleck, who won the wipe out award, Jared Smith, who was the junior surfer of the event and won $1000 courtesy of Hales Douglas, Matt King who won the Killer Bug $250 wave of the contest, and of course the overall champions, the "Candles" who won $1000 from Bannisters resort.
This town is so good.
Bells is in the thick of action at the moment, and as I type, the Australian six-time world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore dominated her round-three heat at Bells Beach.
Gilmore posted a 9.7 wave score on the way to an 18.37 total at the start of Easter Monday competition in the Rip Curl Pro.
South African Bianca Buitendag was no match for Gilmore with 8.67 and Hawaiian Tatiana Weston-Webb posted a 5.03 total. It was much closer in the last third-round heat, with Hawaiian Coco Ho just shading American Courtney Conlogue and Australian Tyler Wright.
Wright scored a 9.07 wave inside the last five minutes, the best of the heat, but it was not enough.
Ho moved into the quarter-finals with her 13.97 total, Conlogue next on 13.77 and Wright scoring 13.74.
Conlogue nearly ended up on the rocks as she desperately tried to take the lead from Ho on the last wave of the heat.
But the judges scored it a 5.77, leaving Conlogue just short.
Conlogue and Wright will go into the elimination fourth round.
A reminder that the Ulladulla Boardriders is on this Sunday meeting at Rennies beach at 7.30am. Hopefully the waves and the weather stays pristine and warm. All new and old members welcome.
Stay classy Milton Ulladulla, and if anyone would like to add anything to this column either call into Milton Ulladulla's surf headquarters AKWA surf or buzz us on 4454 5222 or email me at kurt@akwasurf.com.au.
