UNLIKE most other service organisations, Apex is an Australian initiative.
This Aussie success story was founded in 1931 by three architects from Geelong who were unable to join their local Rotary club because of its limits on members of the same profession, so they formed their own club.
Since then Apex has expanded dramatically, not only across Australia but also in age range.
For decades the organisation catered for member from 18 to an upper age limit of 40, but that limit recently expanded to 45, and now the organisation has given individual clubs the right to set their own upper age limits.
In the Milton Ulladulla Alex Club, that limit is 50 as “we think 50 is the new 45,” explaind club president Matt Dell.
The age range change has allowed a few members to re-join what Matt described as “a bunch of local blokes who try to assist the community in whatever way they can”.
While the membership was only small, the club had the structure including bank accounts and public liability insurance to help out with a range of projects, Matt said.
That has included ARTfest, Ulladullirious, installing the outdoor gym equipment at Mollymook and running the beach games during the annual Blessing of the Fleet Festival.
“I think we punch above our weight,” Matt said.
That work saw the Milton Ulladulla club named Australia’s best Apex Club last year.
However no-one is resting on their laurels, and Matt said the club was always looking for new members and ideas for new community projects the club could take on.
Milton Ulladulla Apex Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at rotating venues.
Quality door to door transport
SHOALHAVEN Community Transport Service provides quality door to door transport to eligible people living independently within the Shoalhaven area.
We have a modern fleet of vehicles including buses, commuters and cars.
Hoists are fitted to most buses to allow easier access for those who have difficulty with steps.
Our volunteers give generously of their time to assist people who are frail aged or have a disability, their carers and those who are transport disadvantaged.
Our volunteers receive uniforms, identification and regular training to ensure we deliver the best possible service to all our clients.
Shoalhaven Community Transport Service would like to thank our volunteers, some of whom have been with us many years, for the valuable, ongoing contribution they make to the local community – without them we couldn’t provide this great service. Thank you!
