Surf Life Saving NSW is advising rock fishers, swimmers, surfers, and boaties to be mindful of a strong southerly swell expected along the NSW coastline over the next two days.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a dangerous surf warning which will be in effect on Friday May 22 and Saturday May 23.
The warning is in place for the coast line between Gabo Island on the NSW-Victorian border and Port Macquarie on the state’s Mid-North Coast.
Peak waves of up to four metres are expected off-shore by late Friday, while waves at the south facing beaches will likely receive sets of between two and three metres.
It is anticipated that the worst of the conditions at the state’s beaches will be on Friday with conditions expected to begin easing throughout Saturday and into the remainder of the weekend.
NSW Lifesaving Manger Andy Kent said the tragic death of a rock fisherman in Sydney last weekend highlighted the importance of taking precautions that could help save a life.
“We strongly urge rockfishers to wear a lifejacket, fish with a partner, have a phone handy, and let people know their plans as these simple steps can help save your life,” Mr Kent said .
“While the circumstances of the man’s death last weekend are yet to be investigated it is known that he wasn’t wearing a life jacket.
“This was a tragic accident that emergency responders faced, and we encourage everyone to take heed of the safety messages before heading out to the coast.”
Volunteer patrols ended late last month, however Surf Life Saving assets are on stand-by to respond to coastal emergencies if required.
A limited number of beaches will be patrolled throughout the winter months by council lifeguards, please check the Beachsafe Website for a list of patrolled beaches, up-to-date beach information and safety tips.
General Safety Tips During Dangerous Surf Conditions:
Avoid rock fishing and water activities on exposed beaches/rock-shelves.
Only swim at patrolled beaches, between the red & yellow flags.
Check the official Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecast before undertaking rock fishing and water activities.
Boaties should seek advice from Marine Rescue NSW and always wear a lifejacket.
