Tenders have been called for the construction of a $4.6 million purpose-built Renal Unit and Palliative Care facility at the hospital.
Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District Chief Executive Margot Mains said significant preliminary and planning work had been undertaken over the past 18 months to determined the best options to maximise the use of space and accessibility on the site.
“I’m sure the community will be impressed with the artist impressions and concept designs for the new addition,” Ms Mains said.
The project will see the construction of a dedicated renal unit with capacity for six dialysis chairs as well as a purpose-built palliative care unit.
“We know that demand for renal services will continue to increase in the future as our community ages,” Ms Mains said.
“Being able to provide dialysis closer to home for residents will certainly be a welcome addition to the hospital.
“Palliative care services are also a hugely important component of any health service and the construction of this speciality unit will enable local families and their loved ones to be more comfortable during what can be an incredibly challenging time.”
Ms Mains commended the community for its ongoing support and fundraising towards the development.
“A number of events have been held in support of the expansion and, as always, it is wonderful to see that community spirit continues to thrive at Milton Ulladulla,” she said.
She said the tender process would enable contractors to submit a bid to undertake work, with construction on the project scheduled to commence early next year.
