“Last year was the first ever nocturnal surfing competition in the world,” said competition coordinator, Kurt Nyholm.
This year is set to be bigger and better, with extra lighting, an earlier start and more entertainment.
Coastal Watch and Surfing World magazine have come on board with the tag team surfing competition, which will entice surfers from out of the area to enter.
Local businesses have also jumped to sponsor the event, and any not-for-profit groups in the Milton-Ulladlulla area are encouraged to contact Kurt at AKWA surf if they would like to set up a barbecue or stall on the day.
“Any group that wants to make it, bake it, sew it or grow it is welcome,” he said.
More than 120 surfers of all experience levels are expected to take part in the competition.
The teams are randomly drawn to encourage people to get to know each other and make new friends.
“There are no bragging rights for winners,” said Kurt.
Entertainment will be plentiful with The Swaggers headlining the afternoon and five other local bands and artists expected to entertain onlookers at the event.
Two possible locations are in the pipeline depending on swell conditions. Either North Mollymook or Golf Course Reef.
Kurt said he did not realise the community engagement last year would be so huge and he is hoping for a similar interest level this year.
The surfing competition is also a charity event and funds will go to Noah’s Shoalhaven, a charity for children with special needs.
Entry forms are available now from AKWA Surf in Milton and more info can be found on the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/562287483945223/.
