The achievement demonstrates two things. One, when there’s a common purpose – in this case turning into reality the dream of a Jindelara Disability Respite House – ordinary people can do extraordinary things. Two, despite exaggerated reports of the demise of the book, they remain treasured companions for many people.
Jann Wayland does not exaggerate, however, when she says the only reason Jindelara is being built is because of the vast amount of money raised in the bookstore. The focus on one project has helped too. With the books that line the shelves all being donated, the whole community has pitched in as well – those who have given books and those who have bought them have all helped Jindelara advance.
In the four years it has been running, the bookstore has forged a real identity for itself and is recommended as a must-visit destination to newcomers and visitors. It’s a safe bet there are plenty of bookshelves throughout the district groaning under the weight of purchases from the store.
The fruits of all that labour are now apparent on the hill above the town, with work on the respite house well under way. It doesn’t seem that long ago we were reporting on the signing of the contract that would get the construction started.
Jindelara’s position overlooking the town couldn’t be better. Once it is finished and improving the lives of the families that use, it will be a permanent symbol of what a determined community can achieve.
Of course, that is some time away still and there is still a need for funds to be raised to pay for Jindelara’s fitout.
Specialised beds and hoists will be required for some of the more profoundly disabled visitors and these can cost up to $30,000 apiece.
So, while the building approaches completion, it’s important we don’t lose sight of the need for more funds.
One should never need an excuse to buy more books and, happily, the Lions Preloved Bookstore can help out. Not only will customers enrich their own lives, they’ll be improving the lives of others at the same time.
Together, we can all help write the next chapter in the amazing story of Jindelara.
