Eileen Scriven’s decorative wedding cake with a sugar passionfruit flower on top was the stand out piece in this year’s masters wedding cake category.
Mrs Scriven was also awarded the Dorothy Evans Perpetual Trophy by the Guild of NSW Inc. The trophy is awarded to the best exhibit in cake decorating and sugar art classes and was also presented to her in recognition of her many years of service to cake decorating.
Mrs Scriven’s bouquet of roses won her first place in the masters’ bridal bouquet section. The cake decorator also claimed second place in the special occasion category for her birthday cake – Merle’s 70th.
Her overall performance also meant Mrs Scriven took home the Bernice J Vercoe annual prize for the most successful exhibitor in cake decorating and sugar art.
Mrs Scriven said the wedding cake probably took about 125 hours to create.
“Covering the board, icing the board, your fabric around the edging, cooking the cake, it never ends,” she said.
“Piping skills get you first prize.”
Mrs Scriven looks after her husband John and admittedly can’t leave the house too often, but she does not mind as she can focus on her cake decorating.
“Well it’s sort of a hobby and a passion,” she said.
“My hubby is not well and I can’t go very far so I love to do my cakes at home for people.”
She also hopes to sponsor a cupcake decorating category for kids with disabilities at next year’s Milton Show.
Mrs Scriven’s daughter Melissa Shea also had a successful entry at the Sydney Royal crafts show.
Mrs Shea was awarded second place in scrapbooking for her double page spread of her wedding.
Her mother says she may have competition in the cake divisions next year too.
“She reckons she’s going to make a cake next year and flog me,” Mrs Scriven quipped.
