Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson was uplifted with youthful exuberance when he spoke to the Milton Ulladulla Times about the last time he toured through Ulladulla.
The accomplished singer, songwriter and guitarist, is known as the voice as face of the Australian punk-band. Since the band went into hibernation in 2013, Jamieson has been putting his skills to use in various projects, including his solo career.
His final solo shows of 2019 include a South Coast gig at the Milton Ulladulla ExServo's on Sunday, April 28 with supports Dana Gehrman from Brisbane and local soloist Chloe Dadd.
The last time Jamieson played in Ulladulla was alongside bands such as Suidical Tendencies (USA) and Pennywise (USA) at the Vans Warped Tour, held at the skate park reserve in 1999
"It was a good time. I'm looking forward to coming to a place I haven't been too in many moons," he said.
"I think we went [to Funland] either before or after [the show]... we ended up on the dodgem cars and doing some weird photo shoot."
Fans will hear some stripped-back versions of Grinspoon songs and his solo works, which blend elements of folk, blues, country and his punk background.
"Obviously I'll be playing some 'Grinners' songs, some are almost unrecognisable," he said.
"The way I approach my solo gigs is, I will maybe play songs how I wrote them originally before they got 'Grinspoonified'.
"For example I play a song called Bad Funk Stripe from the first record Guide to Better Living (1998). I wrote that song on my own when I was 19.
"It shows the nucleus of how songs came to life with a guitar and a voice in some ways."
For the most part of 2019, Jamieson said he was writing for when he begins to record next month.
He said he wasn't sure where the project would end up, but writing for "enjoyment's sake" through a fictional world had been liberating as a songwriter.
"Mainly at this point of time I'm just writing words, which is a bit weird, trying to approach writing in a different manner rather than guitar, melody, bass and then bring in words later," he said.
"So I've just got a moleskin [notebook] and a pen, it's sort of romantic I guess in some ways. Just scribbling down lots of content."
Jamieson encouraged the public to his ExServo's show early to see support Dana Gehrman, who he will be road-tripping with for the show.
"She's incredible, so if you're coming please get down early because she is really, really great."
However, he will save a few hours for one more ride of the dodgem cars.
"Funland is where I'll be before the show and I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday [April 28]."
