The ACT has recorded 25 new cases of COVID-19 in the 24-hours to 8pm Saturday, with more than half linked to existing cases. Three cases were in quarantine for their entire infectious period and at least 16 were infectious in the community. The total active cases in the ACT is now 240. Ten patients are in hospital with COVID-19, four are in intensive care and three of these are in intensive care on ventilation. Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said the number of people infectious in the community was unfortunate. The youngest person hospital is in their 30s and the oldest in their 90s. Eight of those in hospital were vaccinated and none of those are in the ICU. Ms Stephen Smith said there were no further positive cases at the Canberra Hospital following an outbreak of two cases found in a general surgery ward in recent days. The Health Minister urged Canberrans to get tested as soon as possible, no matter how mild their symptoms are. ACT Health updated current wait times at testing locations across the territory after 9am on Sunday morning, with three of the testing clinics reporting negligible queues. The pop-up testing facilities at Gold Creek School and Watson both have minimal wait times, authorities advised, as does the COVID-19 Surge Centre at Garran. Canberra's two drive through COVID-19 testing sites at Kambah and EPIC both have relatively short wait times. While no new cases were found in the Canberra Hospital outbreak, workers have been required to isolate while ongoing testing occurs. Ms Stephen-Smith said there were around 30 staff directly impacted by the outbreak at Canberra Hospital, but that was not a particularly high number to have quarantined in the context of staff being able to move between different wards. "In this particular case, I think it's also important to remember that this is not the only COVID-positive patient that has been identified within Canberra Hospital or across our public hospital and health system. "This is a situation that's been consistently managed by a Canberra health services, and indeed by Calvary on a regular basis." A general surgery ward at the Canberra Hospital was locked down and declared a red zone on Saturday following two patients testing positive to COVID-19. The revelation sparked fears that other services could be disrupted and renewed calls for a vaccine mandate for healthcare staff. The hospital is assessing any further risk to other patients or its workforce after the two patients were moved to the COVID ward. Chief health officer Kerryn Coleman confirmed that there were nine cases in the cluster associated with the construction site at 7 London Circuit included in the latest updates to the exposure sites list. Six of the cases are among construction workers with the remaining three in contacts of those workers. Doctor Coleman said it was not up to ACT Health to shut down sites just because there are COVID concerns on them, but the site owners may choose to do so and authorities were continuing to work with them on identifying further potential exposure. "We will continue to see cases when we have our essential workers out in the community, but this is why we have our strategies such as our COVID safety plans to make sure that we can limit transmission as much as possible."
