The first mountain bike trail in the district, situated at the corner of the Princes Highway and Wheelbarrow Road, was unveiled to more than 100 riders on Saturday, September 28.
The group featuring riders of all ages were among the first people to use more than six kilometres of trails at the Woodburn State Forest Mountain Bike Park.
Before the riders adventured on the new trails Forestry Corporation of NSW partnerships leader Brendan Grimson and Milton Ulladulla District Mountain Bikers Club (MUD MTB) president Jason Colusso gave a background of the idea and who was involved.
Mr Colusso praised track builders Trailscapes for their professional approach, and the NSW Government, in particular South Coast MP Shelley Hancock, for their $200,000 grant support.
He also praised Shoalhaven City Council and his fellow committee and club members who either wrote grant applications and worked tirelessly behind the scenes.
The journey of the track started in 2007.
Following the formation of a new committee in 2016, negotiation over use of Woodburn State Forest began between the club and Forestry Corporation of NSW.
During that time the club engaged designers, which resulted in more than six kilometres of trails with a central hub.
In 2017 the club signed a lease from Forestry Corporation NSW for the use of the land.
Realising that their design was beyond a job the scope of volunteers alone, the club contacted Mrs Hancock for support.
After grant funding was approved the club obtained quotes from professional trail building companies. Once the builder was selected, construction began in June.
Committee members expect the new track will also benefit school children and local enthusiasts and visitors.
During the opening Mrs Hancock and Shoalhaven City Council mayor Amanda Findley also called on the wider community to join the local club.
