Principals play a wide and important role when it comes to all things involved with education.
They are also that crucial link between the school and the wider community.
The Ulladulla region is lucky to have many great principals and we decided it was time to meet them.
So come meet Trent Burns from Ulladulla Public.
Principal: Trent Burns
How long have you been at your current school?
"Since 2017.
What other schools have you taught at?
Cambewarra Public School, Nowra Public School and Engadine West Public School
What do you enjoy most about being a principal?
There are many great things about being a principal and you get to meet so many wonderful people in our community. But the one thing that inspires me the most is the influence that you get to have in the lives of our kids at Ulladulla PS. Our kids are at the centre of everything we do and we are here to provide the best possible environment for them to thrive in. Having a say in what that environment looks like and co-creating with passionate staff make the job very rewarding.
What makes your school so special?
There are many things that make Ulladulla Public School special. The way the kids relate to each other, form bonds and grow together over many years through shared experiences is special to watch. We have many opportunities for our students to shine from debating, sporting, spelling, public speaking, creative arts, environmental initiatives, robotics and more. There are so many dedicated teachers who go above and beyond. One of the things that excites me the most right now is our Synthetic Phonics literacy program that we are moving through the school. As soon as I first came to the school I was so impressed with the school culture, the community and the opportunities that the students receive. This school is special because of the people involved in it - without the people it is just bricks and mortar - the people give it the school spirit and the wonderful feeling to be part of Ulladulla Public School.
How long have you been an educator?
For 21 years
What are the types of issues students face these days?
I think the biggest issue to content with in this generation is social media. There are so many different influences and trends that pop up all competing for the attention of their young developing minds. It is harder for them to switch off, slow down and have those deeper connections with their environment and people.
What was your favourite subject at school?
It was visual arts - I used to love drawing and did a pretty big piece for my HSC. I did like English too. As I have gotten older I really like History and finding out about different cultures and civilisations."
