ULLADULLA teenager Meghan White continues to excel in music, winning Music Shoalhaven’s Hugh Macken Award for promising young piano players.
The 14-year-old started piano lessons with Maryanne Balbi at the age of 10, and quickly showed her aptitude, passing grades two, four and five piano exams in the AMEB classical syllabus.
She also passed her grade one theory exam (musicianship) and will be doing grade two at the end of August.
At the 2012 Shoalhaven Eisteddfod Megan achieved a first and second place; followed by a second place and a highly commended in 2013 as well as receiving the Edna Walker Award for the most promising Shoalhaven pianist 14 years and under, and in 2014 she was awarded two highly commendeds
On Australia Day 2014 Megan was awarded the Milton Ulladulla Times music scholarship sponsored by the Ulladulla Milton Lions Club.
Megan said her favourite classical composers included Debussy as, “I love to play pieces that are dreamy and atmospheric, and also pieces that are dissonant and syncopated.”
Particular favourites included ?Reverie” by Debussy and “ ?In Oriental Style” by Bartok.
“I also like to play and sing songs that are haunting and soulful,” she said.
Megan plans include continued piano study, as well as singing and playing guitar, and hopes to share her passion for music in the future.
