A pop up art gallery and museum will showcase World War I memorabilia as well as student artwork in the Ulladulla High School library next term.
Year nine students spent this week setting up the exhibit that will be open to the public during the school’s Anzac Day commemorations on Friday April 24.
The project is a partnership between the school, the Ulladulla Men’s Shed and the Lake Tabourie Museum.
Ulladulla High was provided with a Federal grant to help set up the display, with Men’s Shed volunteers building timber cabinets to showcase artwork and memorabilia.
The museum came on board and agreed to loan articles from World War I and II for the exhibition.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli, the school has had a special Penny minted, featuring the school’s logo on one side and the Unknown Soldier on the other, which will be distributed during the Anzac Day ceremony.
Exhibition coordinator, HSIE head teacher Ben Barry said the students would be curating the museum and art display, as well as organising a day of activities that would include a light lunch and live music for members of the public, plus a presentation by the grandson of Rupert Cork of Milton who fought in Gallipoli.
The students have also been invited to bring in family memorabilia for the exhibition.
Artwork on display includes dioramas of the battlegrounds, letters and diary entries, ration packs, replica guns, hats and even a red cross nurses uniform.
The display will be open to the public throughout the day, while the official ceremony will take place at 11.30am on April 24.
