The discontinuation of birthing services comes one month after the interim cessation of services following the withdrawal of obstetric services from all practicing doctors due to safety concerns.
The decision comes despite assurance from ISLHD Chief Executive Margot Mains services would be restored once the vacant positions were filled.
“The lack of available GP obstetricians for the afterhours on-call roster is just one of the reasons the decision has been made to cease birthing services at Milton Ulladulla Hospital (MUH),” Ms Mains said.
“The LHD will continue to monitors factors that may affect the type of service provided, including staff and GP interest, workforce availability, maternity service developments and the strength of practical and clinical governance support in the future.”
Ms Mains maintains the current birthing levels at Milton Hospital do not make the provision of maternity services a viable service for the region.
“This decision was not made lightly and comes after extensive consultation with local clinical professionals, together with a full review of options available for the provision of services that are safe and appropriate for both the community and the Hospital,” she said.
“We are aware our decision will be disappointing to some members of the community, and understand there is an expectation to be able to access services as close to home and family as possible.
“However, as a health service, we have a fundamental responsibility to balance that expectation capacity.”
Ante-natal and post-natal services will remain available at Milton Hospital.
Expectant mothers will be able to meet with specialists and midwives at a weekly clinic at Milton Hospital.
New mothers will be able to transfer to Milton Hospital for post-natal care following delivery.
