SMALL surf couldn't stop Ulladulla boardrider Harry Phillips from achieving his maiden contest win in the Mattara Classic recently.
The 14-year-old made the most of the minor swell at South Bar Beach to take out the under 16s category at the Newcastle event.
He said to get the win on the final wave made the victory even sweeter.
“I was pretty stoked with the result,” he said.
“It wasn’t until the final three minutes that I got the wave that led to the win.”
Harry has been surfing since he was seven and now has potential trips to South Australia and the Sunshine Coast for the Rip Curl Grom Search series, lined up.
The series counts many former-world champions and current stars on the world circuit, among its many alumni.
Some of the names are Gabriel Medina, Stephanie Gilmore, Jordy Smith, Matt Wilkinson, Owen Wright, Sally Fitzgibbons, Kolohe Andino, Nat Young and Felipe Toledo.
