Mollymook Surf Life Saving Club patrol captain and concerned resident David Johnson raised $4500 from local businesses to pay for professional lifeguards to patrol the south end of the beach for nine days.
Volunteer lifesavers from the surf club will patrol the beach on weekends and public holidays.
“It is the only patrolled beach in the Shoalhaven for the school holidays,” Mr Johnson said.
“It is a very popular time of year and we see people swimming randomly at the beach so it seemed ridiculous to not have lifeguards there.
“We are encouraging families from Bendalong to Bawley Point to bring their kids to Mollymook so they can swim without disaster.”
Mr Johnson said beach patrols were “needed” at this time of year.
“It is needed for the local community, and for their visiting friends and family,” he said.
“It is a good example of volunteer lifesavers and paid lifeguards working together to watch the beach.”
Volunteer lifeguards will cease patrolling the beach for the 2017/18 season at the end of April.
