Not much to report this week with the inclement weather playing a big part in disrupting our bowls program, although we are getting down to the nitty-gritty in the club singles with one game being played on Wednesday.
This game saw Mick Raftery continue his very good form of this year with a fairly convincing win over Bill Harris; if he continues this form his future opponents will need to bring their very best bowls to the green to get the better of him. This competition seems to have been going for an eternity but the end is in sight with a couple of semi-finals midweek and the final pencilled in for this Sunday.
It should be a cracker given the quality of the semi-finalists so try and get down to have a look. This Saturday sees the club hosting the zone playoffs for both the number 2 & 3 grades pennants where some serious bowls will be played; get down to the club and watch as these guys compete to go to the State playoffs. I guess the other highlight of the week would have to have been the very lucky win of Ron Amos over his old mate Mick Sawicki,
I am sure he will be talking about that to anybody who wants to listen for a few months to come, so be ready to have your ears bashed.Talking about Mick, he has done very well to get to the semi-finals of the Presidents Reserve Singles and we wish him all the best as he tries to go that little bit further and take out the main prize.
Results for the week:- Wed. social:- winners:- Ron Amos/ Ken Coman/ Greg Wray; runners up:- John Ruggers/ Mick Cameron/ Bruce Hathaway.
Fri. social:- overall winners:- Ron Amos (what, again)/ Mick Sawicki 2 wins +16; runners up:- Chris Louis/ Graham Cooper 2 wins +16; 1st game winners:- Ken Smith/ Ross Kidson +22; 2nd game winners:- Dennis Ogilvie/ Jim Neale +11.
Roadrunners
Only fifteen Roadrunners braved the weather last Sunday. Being Mother’s Day, all the ladies were to receive a red rose each, but none turned up. Two games of triples and one pairs game were played with the following results: Tony Hutchins and Wayne Drury 25 overcame Tony Preston and Lee dent 23 with Craig Lees as a swinging lead. Graham Corby, David Henry and David White 29 trounced Harry Williams, Robin Oke and Bob Brooks 7, a good team, out of luck. Peter Champion and Paul Barnes 14 just held on against Geoff Travis and Roy Booth 13.
The $150 half jackpot failed to go off and will be contested again next month. The winning rink of Craig Lees, Tony Hutchins and Wayne Drury won the fresh chickens while the loosing rink of Harry Williams, Robin Oke and Bob Brooks got half their green fees back.
Raffle winners included: Craig Lees, Lee Dent, Graham Corby, Paul Barnes, Tony Hutchins and Roy Booth. Thanks to our cooks, Sue and Lee Dent for an enjoyable lunch. Next Sunday we will be back to normal bowls with the cards being called for a 9am start.
Mollymook Men
Mixed Pairs: Recently advancing to the semi-final were Paul Barnes & Val Brady with a solid 20/16 win against Brian & Judy Thurecht & Al Wynter with bandaged hand & Di Hill had an impressive 34/17 win over Mick Dundas & Deb Boller ( were they sympathetic?..hmmm) The semi-final line-up is Paul & Val versus Alan & Di; Sid & Wendy versus Darcy & Trish. Due to Mother's Day & this following Sunday (the 20th) when the pennants Fours side with some semi-finalists are involved in the Zone playoff at Malua Bay, the date is somewhat rubbery for the semi. To be announced shortly.
Social: The grade 4 pennants practice was washed out last Saturday & will be on tomorrow, Thursday 17th. The monthly first Monday Open Triples all-day comp saw home bowlers win most sections. Overall winners were first: Ron Wynter, Dave Clark & Mike Keegan; second prize Croc Dundas with Peter Crowe & Deb Boller; third place Al Wynter, Ray Flinn & Andrew Jarvis. Wednesday Social Triples warmly welcomed back Neil Parker after a long layoff, also visitors Kevin Brown (Belconnen), Pete Dabour (Windang) & Nick King (Conjola). Reminder: today (the 16th, nominated triples) is a fun sports gear mufti day after the BBQ. Wear your favourite footy or water polo, or whatever, gear! Friday Open Pairs: The $120 prize went to Tony Hutchins & Ron Wynter with a massive 14 points on the five random ends (they had a 7 on the 3rd end against Roy Booth & Geoff Travis!); the $560 jackpot was not won by Ron Wall & Mike Keegan; the KENO voucher was claimed by Dave Munt & Mark Sommerville.
Mollymook Beach Women
Our Club pairs Championship was played over the last two weeks. There were some very tightly contested and exciting games. One game finished with a difference of one point, while two games ended with a two point difference. The Pairs final was contested last Thursday in very blustery conditions. The teams involved were Lyn Newton and Irene Wilson against Trish Moy. And Denise Page. The game got off to an even start but by the conclusion of the game the scores had drifted apart and Trish and Denise were declared the winners. Thank you to all members who entered the competition.
Upcoming events: All members are welcome to attend the annual Interclub Shield to be played this year at Ulladulla on 7th June. Please add your name to the list no later than 24th May if you would like to play.
Our next Club Championship is the triples. Play will commence on Tuesday 5th June. If you would like to play, please add your name to the list before 29th May.

Bowls will be played following the meeting. Thursday May 31 is a Fun Day. Bring a friend to join us for morning tea and a game of bowls. oOur aim is to introduce bowls to some of those who have never tried our sport. This is a free day so gather your friends up and bring them along. The July Carnival is filling up fast so don’t forget to get your entries in. Mollymook Shield is coming up so please check if you have been selected and are available on Tuesday, June 5. Once again the club is hosting the Wheelchair Sports Bowls Championships during the first week of September.
Semi Final – Jean Thompson and Ros Jamieson vs Liz Wootton and Jo Cattley. This was a great game of bowls, Jeanie and Ros as defending champions were the favourites to win but undeterred Liz and Jo put up a great fight. The green was running fairly fast, the weather was almost perfect .Liz and Jo drew first blood scoring a 3. Blows were traded for the first 9 ends with the score at 8-all. Jeanie and Ros then hit their straps and drew away with a haul of 8 shots over the next 3 ends (a 6 on the 12th end!). Liz and Jo countered with 4 shots in the next 2 ends, 4 behind with 4 ends to play. Although each team won 2 of the last 4 ends Liz and Jo went down by 6 at the end of the game. A win to Jeanie and Ros 21-15.
Semi Final – Doreen Dickson and Val Marczan vs Cheryl Davies and Robyn Taylor. Another great game of bowls. Doreen and Val drew first points but watched as Cheryl and Robyn won the next 4 ends. End 8 saw the score at Cheryl and Robyn ahead 8-3. Doreen and Val then took the initiative and took the lead in the 13th end 14-11 after scoring a 5. The teams once again traded shots but Cheryl and Robyn fell short by a mere 2. Doreen and Val coming away with the win 17-15. A fantastic display of bowling.
The Final – Jean Thompson and Ros Jamieson defending Champions vs Doreen Dickson and Val Marczan . The conditions were not quite as nice as they had been on Tuesday. A strong almost gale force wind was swirling across a fast running green. Although Doreen and Val scored the first point Ros and Jeanie managed to counter with 5 in the next 2 ends. They then sat on 5 while Doreen and Val managed to battle back to take the lead 6 -5 in the 6th end. Val seemed to be the one handling the extreme conditions the best. Conditions worsened as the match progressed and many heads were looking like mine fields. As has been their track record Jeanie and Ros gathered all their experience and came back scoring several multiples over the next 7 ends. By the end of the 18 ends Jeanie and Ros came away with the Major Pairs Title for a third consecutive year.
