BOM forecaster Anita Pyne said the chances of a dust storm forming this week was “likely” due to gusty winds and dry soil. 

“While we aren’t certain a dust event could happen, conditions are favourable,” she said. 

“Yesterday we saw some localised dust activity in Western NSW. The dust event proved soil is dry and can be picked up easily.” 

A cold front that moved through South Australia yesterday, with a low pressure trough over New South Wales, is responsible for current conditions.

“That low pressure system will bring strong westerly winds to NSW,” Ms Pyne said. 

“These strong winds have the potential to pick up dust and raise it high into the atmosphere.” 

Winds are expected to pick up on Thursday afternoon, before reaching up to 55km per hour on Friday, making any potential dust storms likely. 

“We can't rule out any events before then, but its more likely later on Thursday and into Friday,” Ms Pyne said. 

The Shoalhaven last experienced a major dust storm in 2009, which stretched from the South Coast up to the north-east of the state

During a dust storm, NSW Health recommends people avoid the outdoors, and cover their noses and mouths with a mask or damp cloth to reduce exposure to dust particles. 

People with asthma, diabetes or a breathing related condition has also been advised to avoid any vigorous exercise.
