The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning a hazard reduction burn at Little Forest Plateau in Morton National Park on Tuesday, May 21.
The hazard reduction burn is scheduled to occur above the escarpment, east of the Tianjara Fire Trail, weather permitting.
NPWS Shoalhaven Area Manager Michael Phelan said the Little Forest burn will cover about 360 hectares and will result in closures for some areas of the park.
"The burn will help protect the Shoalhaven area around Morton National Park and limit the potential spread of wildfire to surrounding private properties," Mr Phelan said.
"Smoke from the burn program will be visible along the Princes Highway and may drift over parts of Milton and Ulladulla by the late afternoon."
The burn will began about 10am. Motorists are reminded to drive to conditions and observe any warning signs of directions from fire crews.
"Tianjara Fire Trail, Pointer Gap Lookout, Mt Bushwalker walking track, Porters Creek Dam, Rusden and Florence Head walking trails and Little Forest walking trail in Morton National Park will be closed to public vehicle access, walkers and mountain bike riders for the duration of the burn," Mr Phelan said.
"We thank our neighbours for their understanding.
"People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors."
The proposed burn will be part of hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year, many with assistance from the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW).
This work is occurring under the NSW Government's $76 million package, over six years, to boost bushfire preparedness and double hazard reduction in the state's national parks, where conditions allow.
