The Viqueens came into the game on a high after posting their first win of the season the weekend previous against the Albion Park Crows. Though undefeated, the Dockettes knew better than to underestimate any team that had had a 10-goal win the week previous.
It was a very physical encounter early as the Dockettes enjoyed the better field position, but they were made to work for every inch as the Viqueens defenders relentlessly pressured the Ulladulla side in their forward 50. The new-look forward line dubbed "Shan squared" had good shape early, with both Shan B and Shan L running their leads and providing targets up front.
Unfortunately the Dockettes battled to hold their marks, the only goal for the quarter coming by way of some Meg Buchanan brilliance with an Eddie Betts-esque snap from the pocket. The Dockettes up 10 zip at the first change.
Coach Daniel called for calm in front of goal and better use of hands out the back in traffic in his quarter time address and it was delivered in spades by forward ace Em Hutchins, as she drew in defenders and dished the ball off to set up goals for Shan and Leigh.
Further afield onball duo Amy and Lucy could easily have been mistaken for a prime Shane Woewodin and Adam Yze, as they looked a class above the Viqueens midfield. The Dockettes up 24-0 at the main change.
The girls in purple lost their way a bit in the third term, a jarred finger to Shannon Bradley, illness to Bethany and a finger fracture to Amy left the Dockers with a reshuffled side. Meg was damaging through the midfield sending the Sherrin into the Ulladulla forward 50, where Lux and Jodie were in their element, bundling players over left, right and centre.
The Nowra-Albatross side's physicality took its toll on the Dockers though, Mia Clough coming off with a head knock and Shan L having the wind knocked out of her. It was a gutsy quarter by the Nowra side, Ulladulla managing just 3 behinds for the term.
Open up the forward 50 was the order for the final term from the coaching staff. Lucy, Mia, Kristelle and Meg did a terrific job of setting up the wall on the forward 50, giving the forwards room to breathe. Em was again devastating, with a few deft touches Giving Shannon L her 2nd and 3rd goals for the match. Jodie was bashing and crashing her way to the footy whenever it was on the deck, dishing it out wide to Mia Clough to show her bouncing skills to any potential rep selectors in the crowd.
Elsewhere Meg never stopped running and creating opportunities whilst Toni Williams showed poise beyond her years to come up with a few classy touches off the half back flank. The final score a 6-goal 13-behind 49 win to zip.
Players player was Meg on 14 votes, runner up Jodie on 13 with Lucy and Regan tied on 12 votes for third. The win sees the Dockettes stay top of the table.
Elsewhere the Dockers men had a come from behind victory against the Wollongong Buldogs at Keira Oval to keep their season on track.
No footy this coming weekend, but everyone be sure to pencil in their diaries, July 20, for the Dockers past players and sponsors day. It's five years since the Dockers reserve grade premiership so we'd love to see a few old heads down having a beer and cheering the purplehaze on!
