Police say a Sydney woman has died after being caught in a rip at Congo on the state's South Coast.

"Just before 4.30pm on Sunday, January 17, emergency services were called to Congo Beach, south of Moruya, after reports a woman and boy were stuck in a rip," police said.
"Police have been told a nearby surfer assisted the woman and boy back to shore, where they were pulled from the water by witnesses.
"Witnesses commenced CPR, but the woman died a short time later.
"She has since been formally identified as a 50-year-old woman from Sydney.
"The 10-year-old boy was assessed by paramedics and was uninjured."
Officers from South Coast Police District attended and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
