The addition of the Storm was officially announced on Tuesday, with former Raiders halfback Trevor Schodel to coach the squad.

The move came after redrawing of catchment boundaries following the merger of NSW Rugby League and Country Rugby League in late 2019. That saw the Southern Highlands move into Group Seven's footprint and the club has been steadily integrated into the South Coast league.

Sims said considerable thought and consultation occurred before the Storm were accepted into the first-grade competition and he feels it's a major step forward for rugby league in the region.

"This decision to bring the Southern Highlands Storm into first grade is exciting," Sims said. "It's a change, it's different, there might be some teething problems, but I'm a big believer that if you don't progress, you regress.

"I've seen insular views in rugby league all around the world, I can see how much it hurts the sport. That's why I'm very passionate in growing the sport that gave me so much, it binds communities together."

Southern Highlands were required to submit a five-year plan to Group Seven and NSWRL officials, the document outlining the club's sustainability and ability to compete with the likes of Shellharbour and Kiama.

Schodel has been involved in coaching across the rugby league landscape and his signing has been hailed as crucial for the Storm.

Taylor Welch is the club's first recruit, the fullback completing a brief stint in the English Super League earlier in his career.

For Sims, the duo provide a solid base for the club to build around.

"Trevor's got rugby league in his veins. He's been coaching rugby league for a long time, he's been in the NRL system, he'll bring a wealth of knowledge and experience.

"Talking to him and hearing his values, discipline, trust, respect, being proud to play for your region, it's great for the club."
