Residents in the Morton area left their homes in a panic on Wednesday, August 15 after being evacuated. The last thing they expected was to return home to find they had been robbed.
However, that is exactly what happened when thieves dressed in emergency service uniforms got past road blocks and entered homes, stealing items from inside.
Senior Constable Doug Nyholm said the serious offences were being investigated and police were following several lines of inquiry.
“It has come to light that whilst the Kingiman fire was burning and numerous homes were evacuated in the area, a person, or people, have entered homes and stolen items, or entered properties and taken things,” Mr Nyholm said.
“A valuable item, a recognisable emu egg set in silver, was stolen. That is not just valuable, but holds sentimental value to its owner.
“These people have been evacuated, fearing for their lives, and someone has gone through their house and stolen gear.”
Mr Nyholm said the thieves got through roadblocks by wearing emergency service personnel apparel.
“They have gone undetected because of this,” he said.
“So, if anyone does know someone who shouldn’t have property in their possession, or have RFS, Police, SES or Ambulance uniforms they are not entitled to, we want to know. They shouldn’t have it.”
A “lengthy” investigation was underway into the incident.
