Little Forest’s Zeke Cameron, 17, organised and performed for the homegrown concert in front of almost 150 people on Saturday, January 19.
The concert was an assignment of the Talent Development Program, a joint initiative between the NSW Department of Education and the entertainment industry.
Zeke said he meets monthly for the program and over two days they either workshop songs to build their performance repertoire and ability or a project to complete.
“This time it was putting on a self-sustained backyard concert,” he said.
“It was all up to us; the song choice, venue, advertising.”
Zeke performed with his brothers Jed and Levi under the band name Canape, with many patrons donning Canape merchandise for the evening.
He said he was shocked so many people from the wider-community attended.
“I was expecting maybe 30 or so people. Ending number was between 130, 140. I really loved every moment of it.”
In 2018 Zeke, an accomplished trumpet player and singer, was also chosen to feature in his fourth Southern Stars and the Schools Spectacular.
Schools Spectacular was a much-larger scale he cherished performing to thousands. He wanted to feature at “Schools Spec” again.
“A lot of time spent rehearsing, a lot of weeks away from home, and like time away from school. It’s a massive grind to get all the songs learnt and everything they want us to do,” he said.
“The week of it’s a lot of perfecting, a lot of learning about what happens behind the scene of a stage set and of course the big night where you are out on stage with thousands of people, watching you, cameras all over the place, it was a really great experience.”
He also reinforced valuable lessons about preparing for a performance.
“Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse until your fingers bleed and your throat’s dry,” he said.
“Working with people who are always there to help you. People like sound guys, that’s always a huge thing you learn during those experiences.”
Zeke is a finalist at the Ulladulla Milton Lions Club Australia Day celebrations. Acts begin at 10am.
