Thomas and William Hatcher-Nee travelled to Inverell last week to represent the south coast region in the state schools competition, playing singles and doubles matches against selected primary school tennis talents from across NSW.
Hosted by NSW Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA), the championship tournament involved 13 regions with teams of five boys and five girls totalling 130 kids, including two teams from the Catholic sector, the Combined Independent schools (CIS) along with 10 public school regions.
Thomas and William were ranked number 1 and 2 in the boys South Coast team and they combined well with their team mates. Despite finding themselves in the stronger part of the draw they performed well with the South Coast finishing 7th overall.
Their team coach Joel Irwin, a Milton school teacher, explained to the team that you learn more from losses than wins. This was the case, with the highlight being Thomas's narrow loss to an Australian top 10 player, going down 7-5 and William avenging a loss to North West where he went down 6-2 only to show grit in coming back in the play-offs to beat the same player 6-4.
