The relay will return to the Milton Showground over the weekend of October 17 and 18, with organisers hoping to smash all previous attendance and fundraising records during the fifth annual event.
Coordinator Caz Boland said the event would honour those who have passed in the past year, including prominent relay supporters Jo Grant and Cindy Wheatley who both lost their battles with cancer.
Cindy’s family and friends inspired this year’s Carnivale theme, that Caz expects will be embraced by participants.
“We hope to see teams out there on the track wearing their sequins and feathers,” she said.
“We’ll have a dress up box this year, so we can add bling to anyone who is underdressed.
“Team Ralph and Cindy thought this would be a great theme in honour of Cindy who recently passed away after a long battle with cancer.
“We would love to see the showground come alive with colour.”
Following last year’s relay, which was held at Ulladulla’s Lighthouse Oval, Caz said the 2015 event would return to the Milton Showground as it offered more facilities.
While the theme and activities will be colourful and fun, the relay will be a chance for the community to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, patients and their carers, to honour and remember loved ones lost to cancer and to raise money to help save more lives.
With four teams already registered almost $3,000 has so far been raised for the Cancer Council’s research, prevention, information and support services.
Caz said the fifth relay was a milestone for the community and continued to be “blown away” by the ongoing support.
“The last five years have definitely flown by,” she said.
“A lot has happened since relay number one and I am in disbelief, I guess, at just how many people have been affected by cancer in some way in those five years.
“I never thought that I personally would know so many and also to lose my dad in that time to cancer and way too many friends.”
However, Caz said it was important also to remember those who have beaten cancer or taken steps to change their lives.
“We also have so many survivors that have beaten this awful disease which is great news,” she added.
“It’s because of events such as relay that get the message out there that early detection is the key and to raise funds for vital research programs to help combat cancer.”
Caz is hoping to spread the relay message beyond the showground this year and is calling for the whole district to “paint the town purple”.
“It would be great for the whole town to get behind relay and decorate their shop and windows purple.”
People can now register teams at relayforlife.org.au and search Milton Ulladulla.
