Cancer Outpatients Appeal (COA) president Peter Still saw a need for a men’s supportive network and decided to complete training through the Cancer Council, along with COA member Grant Schultz, to form the Men’s Health and Cancer Support Group.
Milton Ulladulla Cancer Services Centre nurse practitioner Bill Jansen has also joined the push to get the group off the ground.
A meeting to gauge support for the group will be held at Mollymook Surf Club on Thursday, July 12 from 6pm.
“We have these sorts of groups in Nowra, but there is nothing here,” Mr Still said.
“The aim of this meeting is to talk about men’s health and cancer, and to gauge the level of support needed to establish such a group.”
Mr Still said the group would be a “confidential and safe place” for men to talk about their issues and be supported.
It is anticipated a guest speaker will attend each of the group’s meetings, to be held at least monthly, to discuss a topic of interest, followed by time for members to take part in discussion.
“At the first meeting, there will be presentations on prostate cancer screening, emotional support and benefits of yoga for health,” Mr Still said.
Partners and spouses are encouraged to attend as well. To RVSP, phone Peter on 0448 545 652 or email acaciahouse@bigpond.com.
