Milton Library was reopened on Monday, December 10, following a two-week closure as the historic space was revamped.
The refurbishment included an extension of the children’s space, moveable shelves, furniture and a more effective layout for the various groups who use the library.
South Coast MP Shelley Hancock joined with Alison Pakes, Sara Eastway, Shoalhaven mayor Amanda Findley and the Friends of Milton Library to cut the ribbon and officially mark that the library was again open for business.
Mrs Hancock praised the volunteers who have worked “so hard to keep the library open”. She recalled the power the community displayed when it marched more than four years ago to stop council from closing the library, and how they’ve worked together to expand opening hours.
“Now everyone has come together again to fund and facilitate this fantastic refurbishment,” Mrs Hancock said.
“It has been a real community effort with the NSW Government contributing a total of $50,000, the Illawarra Mutual Builders Society $10,000, and fundraising and donations from the community.”
Mrs Pakes praised the many local businesses, community groups, and the NSW government for funds that have ensured the library could be modernized.
“We have tried to create a light and airy space, with comfortable furnishings but which is also versatile for its use as a community hub.”
