So far spring is already showing the potential to surpass winter; so far we have been lucky to have thick consistent lines of swell flowing into our coast like warm slobber from a bulldog.
Although we have still had to tolerate more of those strong westerly winds, it did create a solid ground swell which lingered and allowed the waves to hover around pretty much every day.
It looks like the waves will be a little smaller this week but there will be still enough leftover meat to serve the surfers on the South Coast.
It was a little disappointing over the weekend, nothing too gnarly but when the forecast was showing meaner swells approaching and they subside as the days get closer, it does leave your tastebuds a little bland, especially when you mentally prepare yourself for a certain type of wave.
Take Saturday morning for example, the internet gods were adamant we were about to get hammered by 8ft waves. However when the day arrive, it was more like a measly 2/3ft. This didn't dampen the froth levels of Simon Abbott who gleefully made his way towards the ever consistent Flatty where he surfed from the early wee morning to early lunch, catching more waves than he has in the past 3 weeks in one session, to leave him with a mix of sore arms and waterlogged ears
Filipe Toledo is incredible at Trestles. He moved to San Clemente in 2014 and quickly he adopted the California break as his home wave. He smashes it consistently when he's around. But his Hurley Pro at Trestles track record -- while OK -- hasn't exactly delivered … until now. Toledo smashed his way through the Final, but 1st he had to get through Kanoa Igarashi and John John Florence. His last obstacle was current tour leader Jordy Smith, another pro who now calls San Clemente home. Jordy had been ripping all week but it was Toledo's and he's jumped into this year's World Title race.
