Suffering a car accident a number of years ago, the Coolamon farmer enjoyed coastal respite staying with sister Kathy Bradley in Milton-Ulladulla.
Kathy said it was a magical moment watching Garry enjoy the waves and the sand.
“It was beautiful to see,” Kathy said.
“He is a new person around the beach and the waves.”
Garry enjoyed a number of beach holidays with family as a young man and with the help from Mollymook surf lifesavers he caught waves once again.
“I moved here six years ago myself and I help provide respite care to Garry by the beach,” sister Kathy said.
“It had been three years since he had touched salt water.
“He was so overwhelmed he was in tears. It has been a tough journey and to feel the water and the waves was just magical for us.”
Kathy Bradley said the beach wheelchairs allowing equal access is so important for people living with disability.
“Garry tells me he feels invisible following the injuries, with people too embarrassed to make eye contact,” she said.
“You lose your identity.”
The beach wheelchairs are available free of charge through Mollymook Surf Life Saving Club and Lake Tabourie Holiday Haven Park in the Milton-Ulladulla region.
Bookings can be made through Mollymook Beach Surf Club by visiting the club or phoning Adam on 0423 436 611.
