In South Africa Kerry and Craig visited Kruger National Park and Sabi Sabi, a private game reserve. They showed splendid photos of their experience of viewing wildlife from open safari vehicles. The tour leaders do not report rhinoceros sightings over citizen band radio as poachers listen in.
The final part of Kerry and Craig’s 12 day visit was spent in Chobe National Park in Botswana. There they took a river boat cruise for close-up views of hippopotamus and crocodiles.
The first guest speaker was Karen Denny, a business manager from IRT who works in the Shoalhaven and Eurobodalla areas. Karen focused on IRT’s home care program which supports older people to live independently at home. Karen recommended registering with the Australian Government’s My Aged Care as it is the entry point to access aged care services. Services may include help around the home, personal care and assistance, getting out and about, health and wellbeing support, social connection, and home safety and security.
The second guest speaker was Yolande Cozijn the publicity officer for BirdLife Shoalhaven, a branch of BirdLife Australia. BirdLife Australia is dedicated to creating a bright future for Australia’s birds by encouraging an awareness of our native birds and by influencing decision makers through policies, submissions and campaigns.
Throughout her presentation Yolande showed photographs of birds, many taken on her property near Jervis Bay. With humans being one of the biggest threats to birds, Yolande spoke in particular how people can help birds flourish.
Home gardens can provide shelter and food for our birds but not if a yard consists only of lawns and paved areas. Dense planting gives shelter and protection for small birds.
Bird baths need to be kept clean, placed in dappled shade with a perching area nearby. If provided, a feeding station needs to be cleaned daily to prevent cross infection between birds.
Yolande encouraged members to take part in BirdLife Australia’s Aussie Backyard Bird Count on 22-28 October.
President Brian Powe thanked Karen and Yolande and presented them with a thankyou gift from the Club.
Ulladulla and Districts Probus Club meetings start at 9.45am at the Milton Ulladulla ExServos Club on the second Friday of each month.
