The grants are awarded to allow the sheds to continue their promotion and support of men’s health and wellbeing across the region.
“Men tend to open up and talk when they are working side by side and by giving men a chance to work together on projects, learn a few new skills, and build new friendships, Men’s Sheds are hugely important in helping men overcome feelings of isolation that often follow retirement or moving to a new community,” Federal Member for Gilmore Ann Sudmalis said.
Grants to the Men’s Sheds in Milton-Ulladulla, Sanctuary Point, Greenwell Point and Sussex Inlet are part of $400,000 in national funding distributed to 93 community Men’s Sheds across Australia.
Announcing the grants, Federal Member for Gilmore Ann Sudmalis said the Men’s Shed programme was going from strength to strength.
“Men’s Sheds are a popular way for men to connect with their community,” Mrs Sudmalis said.
“Whether it’s through a building project, a first aid workshop or a transition to retirement seminar.
“That’s why I encourage our local blokes to give a shed a go.”
Men’s Shed grants support the purchase of tools, equipment, community projects, training, building maintenance and development, and health improvement activities.
“Men tend to find their identity in their paid work, and when that ends there are some men who lose their sense of purpose, which is where Men’s Sheds step in,” Mrs Sudmalis said.
“Here in Gilmore we also have wonderful sheds that are involved in mentoring and helping charities, so the benefit spreads even further.”
In this funding round the Milton-Ulladulla Men’s Shed has been given $4,400, $3,500 has been allocated to the Greenwell Point Men’s Shed, the Sanctuary Point Men’s Shed has gained $3,580 and $6,579 going to the Sussex Inlet Men’s Shed.
Grants are competitive with priority given to sheds in disadvantaged areas.
